Things to See

South West Kerry

The true treasure of the Kingdom of Kerry.

Our community includes many vibrant towns and villages extending across an area of 250 square miles from Kells Bay to Sneem. Like a mystical land that has emerged from the swirling ocean, South West Kerry invites you to discover its beauty, adventure and culture.

A journey along the beautiful Ring of Kerry road through the region will take you from the picturesque Kells with its spectacular views of Dingle Bay, through the region's capital, the lively market town of Cahersiveen, then on to Waterville, nestled between the Atlantic and the tranquil Lake Curran. From there onto the charming villages of Caherdaniel, Castlecove and award winning Sneem. Further west is Valentia Island with its unique flora, Slate Quarry and Tetrapod Trackway, accessed by Ferry from Cahersiveen or bridge at Portmagee. The dramatic Skellig Ring road will take you from the pretty fishing village of Portmagee to the renowned Gaeltacht of Ballinskelligs and the remote and beautiful Glen with its dramatic views of the Skelligs, (Skellig Islands) which is now a World Heritage (UNESCO) site. The Kerry Way hiking route at 215km is one of Ireland's longest walking trails and also one of its most popular. It takes you into the heart of the region and there you will find Dromid, a vibrant Gaeltacht whose centre is the village of Cillin Liath, where you can enjoy the best of our culture and traditions.

Visitors can see our neighbouring peninsulas, the Dingle Peninsula to our north over Dingle Bay and to our south, the Beara Peninsula across Kenmare Bay. Nine miles off our western Atlantic shore stands the World Heritage (UNESCO) site of the Skellig Isles with a history dating back 1500 years.

With a diverse landscape from rugged coastline and mountains to rolling countryside dotted with ancient monuments (relics of early christian civilisation), this region offers a huge range of attractions and interests - outdoor activities, history, and culture. Find out more about all the attractions and activities in the region on Activities.
